Concert Scheduled to Raise Funds for Japan's Earthquake, Tsunami Victims

Several local bands are working together to donate the raised money to the American Red Cross.

The Palm Desert-based group New College Try, and other local bands, will come together next month to help raise money for those impacted by Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami disasters.

The show, “CodeGreen: A Concert + Japan Relief,” is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at the Marywood Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage. The proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

New College Try formed six months ago, by four high school students from Palm Desert and La Quinta high schools.

Their sound is influenced by some of the biggest pop-punk bands such as Incubus, Blink-182, Sum-41, Weezer, and A Day to Remember, according to 18-year old bass player Yale Jesser, who attends PDHS.

“New College Try is a spin-off of the saying, give it the old college try. We just tweaked it a little bit and thought that it sounded cool," Jesser said.

Other bands in the line-up include Cakes & Brains, Caxton, You Me & Us featuring Carlee Hendrix, and Sun Baked.

“We are excited for the show,” Jesser said. “It’s going to be really fun, and it’s for a good cause. Everyone should come check it out!”

Pre-sale tickets are available for $10 on the CodeGreen Concert website.

There will also be Japanese flag colored bracelets on sale the day of the event for $3, all proceeds will be donated to disaster relief efforts.
