American John Isner Pulls Upset In Semi-Finals At BNP Paribas Open

World No. 11 John Isner won in the third set against No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

With fans waving American flags, John Isner beat World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in three sets, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 7-6 (5), during the semi-finals Saturday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Isner – a 6-foot 9-inch North Carolina native – pumped his fist in victory in a jaw-clenching tie-breaking finish against the Serbian.

The American dominated on the service line with speeds up to 143 mph at times. The victory moves Isner into the ATP's top 10 rankings when they are released next week.

Djokovic gave all the credit to Isner for the upset.

“Overall it was a good tournament for me and I am staying positive,” Djokovic said during a press conference following the match.

Djokovic had won 11 consecutive matches in Indian Wells, before Saturday's upset.

Isner, who is ranked 11th, will go on to play in the finals against the winner of a match this afternoon between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
