Cold Front Bringing Winds Overnight, Freeze Watch Issued for Joshua Tree

A cold front moving through the San Gorgonio Pass was expected to bring gusty winds through early Wednesday in the mountains and deserts, including the Coachella Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

Overnight lows around 40 were expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning for Beaumont and Banning, and around 50 in the Palm Desert area.

"Winds will diminish early Wednesday after the frontal passage," the Weather Service advised. "The cold air behind the front will drop temperatures below freezing for areas of the high desert early Wednesday morning."

A high wind warning was in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday, with sustained westerly winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour possible. The strongest winds were expected near mountain ridges, along desert mountain slopes and into portions of the adjacent deserts, according to the Weather Service.

A freeze watch was issued for Wednesday evening through Thursday morning for the Joshua Tree National Park area. Lows could range from 23 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Overnight lows in the mid 30s were expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning for Beaumont and Banning, and below 40 in the Palm Desert area.
