HUNGER ACTION MONTH: Give a little, Feed a lot
April is Hunger Action Month and you can help FIND Food Bank several ways, some of which cost nothing but your time. Give a little, feed a lot!
April is Hunger Action Month and FIND Food Bank in Indio hosted a kickoff party in its enormous warehouse last night to introduce people to the reality of what it takes to make sure that our neighbors don’t go hungry.
FIND is an acronym for Food In Need of Distribution – there’s plenty of food in this country, but spreading it around equitably is a logistical challenge. A food bank is the hub to a designated region that makes sure that food is available and accessible to all of its partnering agencies that distribute food directly to those in need.
FIND was established in 1983 and serves eastern Riverside County and southern San Bernardino County. Its food comes from local and regional growers, local grocers and warehouse stores, local food drives, corporate partners (including Kraft, Cargill, General Mills & Conagra), and the USDA.

They also use donated funds to purchase essential products that aren’t donated. FIND and its partners distribute food assistance to an average of 80,000 people a month.
The kickoff party was created so that people could see what FIND is all about, tour the facility, chat with CEO Lisa Houston, and enjoy an array of hors d’oeuvres from Catering by Design. The sheer enormity of the warehouse, with a huge inventory of foodstuff that is electronically tracked as it moves in and out of the facility, boggled my mind.

Among FIND’s April fundraising efforts is a telethon on CBS Local 2 on Friday, April 5th from 5 pm to 11 pm. Volunteers will be taking donations, but will not interrupt regular programming – you’ll see them during commercial breaks. Every $10 donated pays for 70 meals!
It costs nothing to “Like” Find Food Bank on Facebook, and an anonymous donor will give FIND $1 for every new “Like” in April.
You can also help FIND win $45,000 from Walmart by going to its Facebook page and searching for the Walmart Fighting Hunger Together voting link. You can vote for FIND every day in April - you don’t have to “Like” Walmart to vote. FIND will have a direct link on its website that will take you to the Walmart voting page (www.FindFoodBank.org).
